A Boring Afternoon

portrait of three Kurdish boys

Kurdish Boys

A Village in Eastern Turkey 2008

I was trying to get a good viewpoint for Hosap Castle, a 17th century Kurdish Fort. As I clambered up a slippery hill these boys ran up to me. I was going to be their entertainment on a boring afternoon. Little did they know that they were my entertainment as well.

Now, when I look at their faces, I can see that their personalities are written in their expressions. The boy on the left in the photo is a sweetie-pie. He’s a bit fearful. He looks ready to run at the instant I do anything suspicious. He’s being held by the neck by the middle boy who seems to be the leader. He’s a very handsome fellow and full of confidence that everyone he meets will like him. He’s friendly but not overly so. He’s used to people making over him. The boy on the right may also be fearful but it is manifested in belligerence and a rather threatening expression. His lips are pressed together and his eyes narrowed. He’d be the first to throw a rock at me.

No rocks are thrown, however. Most likely it is due to the confidence of the middle boy. He isn’t worried about me at all. I’m just a thing, something to amuse him for a few moments on a boring afternoon.
