Abandoned Kasbah

Ouarzazate Morocco: some time in the late 1990’s

There are several old kasbahs on the opposite side of the river from the town of Ouarzazate. A crumbled village sits behind the crumbled Kasbah and that is where this woman is headed. She carries a load of bamboo. Maybe she is refurbishing her home. Moroccans often make their ceilings from bamboo.  Or maybe her husband will use the bamboo to make furniture.

I watched her climb the hill with her burden. She was unaware that I was photographing her, but she couldn’t have hidden from me with that load. She zig-zagged her way to the top and I got several shots. this one is the best because the light hit the bamboo and her striped skirt was billowing in the wind. It’s one of my favorite shots from Morocco.

Thanks, Torie. I used to fly out of Ouarzazate and I always stayed in a small, Berber hotel on this side of the river. The other side has the deluxe hotels, btw. I always went to the kasbahs to try to get a shot. Sometimes, I was lucky.
