Alone

Burma 2011

A small boy stands obediently as I photograph him. He is slender and delicate looking, but he did not seem afraid. Behind him, lying on the table, is his tray…his begging bowl. He must go out at least two times a day to beg for his food. It isn’t as awful as it seems as he will have “favorite” donors who will be honored to see him each day and will have cooked some food just for him.

Can you imagine an American mother letting her child beg for his food?
