Amish Farm Boys, Lancaster PA

Lancaster, PA 1992

Norman Rockwell comes to mind when I see this photo. It’s one of my early shots taken when I was in my first  year of photo classes. My teacher wasn’t interested in this subject matter. He preferred pretty girls and “concepts” that pushed the envelope of social values. My photos didn’t “blow his skirt up” as he used to say, but I didn’t change to suit him.

I’m thinking my photo has outlasted his. Who can look at these faces and not think that our country’s greatness comes from boys (…and girls) like these?

You can see that I am looking for symmetry here, and I found it in the perfect arrangement of hats. The face of the father in the right corner could be a portrait in itself. I look for these type of shots and often forget to work as hard for the ‘overview’ shot. I must try to remember to get the wide shot because sometimes, depending on the scene, that is the only shot.
