An Incomplete List

I’ll be cooking the Thanksgiving dinner and I’ve got recipes stacked all over my counters: books, magazines, and printouts from the internet. Each recipe seems to have a list of ingredients as long as your arm as my mother used to say. Try as I might, I can never write out a complete grocery list…something is always missing. It might be a staple like salt…one year I ran out of salt…or flour…you use so much if you bake Stollen for breakfast and rolls for dinner and pancakes for breakfast…and then there is butter which goes into everything and is slathered on everything and is the reason everyone loves stuffing or dressing as we say in South Carolina.

Although I took my list to the store and bought everything on it only yesterday, I have to return to the store again this morning. I woke up in the middle of the night and remembered that I need a can of evaporated milk for the pumpkin pie, some fizzy apple cider for the tee-totalers…and salsa and chips… maybe some cold cuts to snack on. I hope I’ll get everything I need, but if I don’t I can write out a new list this afternoon.
