Bush Rat and The Other Kind

Food Stall in Ghana Market

Ghana, 2003

The golden brown, crispy object in the foreground is a fried bushrat, a common source of meat for people of West Africa. We’d often see boys, who had caught one of these large rats in the fields, standing by the side of the road, holding it by its tail hoping to sell it for someone’s dinner.

The Gift

A surprise gift of a rat from a cat to its owner. Although the cat could not resist a few bites he left the meaty thighs which must have been a bit of a sacrifice for him. And he placed it where his owner would be sure to find it…in the satchel she takes to work each morning. Notice how he placed the  head along side the body. Another delicacy, no doubt, as one ear is missing. This cat was thinking!
