Tufa chimneys in Cappodocia Turkey

Fairy Houses

Cappadocia somtime in the mid 90’s

These structures are called Fairy Chimneys and were once lived in by the people of this region. When I visited, almost no families lived in here. We were told that due to  high radiation from the tufa stone that families had been moved to  modern housing in the nearby settlements. I don’t think this was true as people had been living in these places for centuries. Maybe it was another case of eminent domain.

It’s a fascinating landscape but difficult to photograph in black and white especially as we were there at midday.  I hand colored the umbrella on the left to give a sense of height.
