Cave-Dwelling Berbers

Welcome!

Morocco, 2009

Berber families live in the caves near Boumalne Dades. Here a man welcomes us into his home. He seemed happy to have a conversation with the guides. Normally he only has his women to talk to and as my guide told me, women talk about “nothing”.

berber women weave in their cave home

The women were not so happy to see us enter their cave. The older woman hid her face but carried on with her weaving when I put my camera down.

The cave was dark except for the light that entered through the doorway and that was where the women had their loom. I suppose there isn’t a lot of dusting and cleaning going on when you live in a cave so the women have plenty of time for weaving.
