The Chimney in Monument Valley

The Chimney in Monument Valley

USA 2013 Monument Valley, Arizona

Most landscapes are horizontal format. Although I seem to have a penchant for trying a vertical landscape, most of the time they don’t work for me. I shot the chimney as a horizontal. And I like that viewpoint, but here the vertical has more to offer, IMO. (I’ve decided to use IMO as shorthand for “in my opinion”.)

First there is the texture of the blown sand dune. Texture is always good except in a portrait of a child or young woman. Then we have the tumbleweeds clinging in a curved line  leading our eye to the foot of the massive rock structure that is our subject. And even in this narrow format, we are able to see near, middle and far distance and each has a focal point. Of course, the chimney is our subject, but the dunes, tumbleweed and distant cliff complete the landscape and the story.

I’ve spent my entire life among the deserts of the Southwest and I find this picture very lovely and in a way quietly comfortable. Thanks specially for it. Jerry

      Hi, Jerry.

Glad you like the photo of Monument Valley. Landscapes are your favorite, I think, while photographs of people are my favorite. So, I especially appreciate your faithful emails.
