At the Dongguan Mosque

Xining, China A woman holding her sons begs in front of the Dongguan Mosque

The Family

Xining, China 2007

She might have to beg, but she has pride. She turns her face away from my lens. She is ashamed to be photographed by a foreigner. I would be, too. She has come to the largest mosque in Qinghai Provence on a Friday to beg. She knows the men who come to pray will be in a mood to give as giving alms is a tenet of Islam. From the amount of money in her box and the fistful of bills in her hand,  the worshippers are generous.

When I look at this photo, my eye goes to the bright, curious, face of the boy in her lap. He knows I’m different and he’s watching to see what I will do.
