Empty Places: Tibet

Clouds over China

China 2007

White, fluffy clouds huddled over the vast steppes of Qinghai. Now and then we’d see a yak hair tent with prayer flags flapping.

Interior of Yak-Hair Tent

The women in the tent continued to card yak wool as we tourists gaped at their home. One woman was shy to the point of being fearful and tried to hide herself behind the bolder one. It seemed that they lived in this spot for long periods of time as there was a version of a kang or stove in the tent.

Although these people live in China, they are Tibetan so I always refer to this part of China as Tibetan.
