Hani People of Yunnan

Surprised

China, Yunnan Province 2005

A Hani mother carries her sweet-faced baby on her back while she shops at a country market. The colorful fabric used to tie the baby to her body is typical of her tribe’s embroidery. Women of the Hani tribe wear a black pajama with small embroidered touches. Their headdress resembles a kerchief with an abundance of fringe.

Hani Woman with Chicken

The women of the Hani and the Yi tribes wear only their traditional clothes. Some of the younger men of the tribe wear western clothes. I imagine women, like the one pictured here, would rather die than go out of the house wearing western clothes. I do like their outfits. I’ve often thought it would be much more convenient and flattering to wear traditional garments. Just grab up your black pajamas and wear them for any and every occasion.
