Gray Horse at Pasture

California, U.S.A. 2015

I was inspired by my daughter to try to shoot some art shots of horses. She had seen some beautiful shots on Pinterest.  Some photographers had noticed beauty in the lines of a horse’s neck, or muzzle or ears or eyes. They’d isolated these aspects and enhanced them with Photoshop. Sometimes, for a person who has spent decades with horses, the enhancing went too far, but still the idea was beautiful and intriguing, worthy of imitation.

Yesterday I drove out to a horse ranch near my home. I used to keep horses there when my girls were small. We rode every day, breathing in the pungent perfume of horses, and eucalyptus trees and the sharp smell of freshly pruned lemon trees. I walked under those trees yesterday. The memories flooded back.
