Huddled Masses

ethiopian Christians huddled in white shawls on a hillside in Lalibela

Lailbela, Ethiopia

Lalibela, Ethiopia 2013

The white draped figures of Ethiopian Christians are listening to the mass over a loudspeaker. The ancient churches are small and less than a hundred can fit into the room where services are held. The liturgy begins at six in the morning and will continue until eleven or so. No wonder some seem to be dozing. Although, it did not feel cold to me, the Ethiopians are used to hot weather and 70 degrees is chilly to them. It’s easy to doze when you are huddled in your warm shawl.
