Uzbek musician plays rubab

Uzbek Maestro

Samarkand, Uzbekistan 2012

He sat in his tiny shop in one of the cells of the ancient madrassa. Exotic instruments lined the walls. He picked one and began to play a classical Uzbek melody.

My friend, Torie, and I photographed several musicians on our adventure in Uzbekistan. The long-necked instruments gave me fits as I tried to include the entire instrument as well as the musician’s face. This one is my best but I didn’t like it at first because it looks commercial. But now, with the passage of time, I do like it. I like the setting, the man’s face and the fact that I included a magazine article about him in the foreground. Sometimes it is best to let instinct take over.
