After applying the intricate makeup, a Kathakali performer adjusts the voluminous skirt of his costume. His green face tells us that he plays the part of a virtuous character in the play. The performance of Kathakali is similar to a scripted pantomime. Facial gestures, especially the eyes, convey emotion. Performers spend years learning their craft.
