Koi

colorful koi swim together in a Japanese garden pool

I spent nearly a half hour shooting the koi as they swam about their pool at the Japanese Garden in Balboa Park. Their colors and the way their shimmering bodies formed different designs made it hard to stop shooting.

The colors changed depending on my viewpoint and the way the light hit the water, so although I have many shots, they are not one of a kind.

I used several plug-ins on this photo: Alien Skin’s Exposure X and several of Topaz Labs applications. These smeared the colors of the fish and underwater plants giving them the look of a painting. You could go crazy with those plug-ins but I always come back to something close to my original photo. I like realism.
