Mali: Somewhere between Taodenni and Timbuktu 2005

Men load salt slabs on several hundred camels each dawn and unload them when the caravan stops for the night which may be at 2 or 3 a.m. They repeat these chores each day for the more than three weeks it takes to walk the 500 miles from Taodenni, where the salt mines are,  to Timbuktu.
