Memory of Santorini

portrait: a Greek fisherman sips some refreshment

Home from the Sea

Santorini, Greece in the late 1980’s

Some moments embed themselves in your mind and stay there forever, popping up at odd times bringing back shards of memory fresh and clear and sharp. I can see the shack of a restaurant, empty except for me, my husband and our daughter. The sun-glittered sea lapping a few feet from our table. Then a small boat docking and two men dragging their catch to the restaurant floor: red mullet…a whole box full. We shared the mullet with the fishermen and the proprietress.  It was smiles and toasts and delicious food. It was Greece.
