Mongolian Shaman

Mongolia: a shaman performs a ceremony

The Shaman

Mongolia 2014

The shaman’s eyes were hidden behind his elaborate headdress. The three dots of red from which stream braided and beaded thongs become his “eyes”. Now he has three eyes.  He stares at me as he slowly beats the drum. The drum is his horse, or camel, a means of transportation, to the spirit world. My guides and I were the only people in the ger. The atmosphere was one of reverence.

I was told to sit on the left side of the Shaman. The spirits came down highlighting the shaman with a streak of sunlight from the top of the yurt.  I was in the perfect spot to get some fabulous shots.
