Monsoon Season

Burma: a woman carrying baskets on her head wades through a flooded river

Going Home

Burma 2011

Heavy rains fell almost every day. We’d been told that the Monsoon season was over, but apparently it wasn’t. The Burmese took it all in stride. They simply grabbed broom and bucket when the rain ended and started sweeping and bailing their shops and homes.  When I saw someone knee-deep in water as this woman is, I couldn’t help feeling a shiver of fear: what if a snake was in there, just waiting for something or someone to grab onto?
