Morocco’s Desert Berbers

Woman of the Tafilalet

Morocco late 1990’s

A Berber woman sits in the shade of her tent and waits for the kettle of water to boil. Whenever guests arrive, it’s tea time in Morocco.

I’m glad to see that my shot included the men in the distance. Did I deliberately include them? I doubt it. I would have been trying to get as many shots of the woman as possible. Berbers will tolerate being photographed if you are accompanied by another Berber, but their tolerance is short-lived.

I was lucky here. The bright sunlight bounced off the desert floor and lit the woman’s face. Her downcast eyes make this photo.
