Niger: Wodaabe Ceremony

Niger: Wodaabe men dance and Wodaabe women watch

Geerewol

Niger: Somewhere near Agadez

The Wodaabe are nomadic. The elders, women and children set up camps and send the young men out with the cattle. They men stay with the cattle until the grass is sparse, then the camp is moved. It took us a bit of driving hither and thither to find this tribe. The chief, who knew our leader, sent for the young men. In return for the sacks of millet which we had brought…and bought…we were treated to a Geerewol. The Wodaabe women, standing in the rear, thought the dance was a treat as much as we did.

This is a scan from a slide. Nowadays, in Photoshop, I could add a more interesting sky, but look at those feathers! No. The sky was etiolated then and it is now.
