Morocco: a Barb horse hitched to a wagon waits near Rissani market

Evening in Rissani

Rissani, Morocco 1997

I’ve never shown anyone this photo before, but I’ve always loved it. The beautiful Barb horse standing between the shafts of a wagon, the palm trees and the two women wrapped in  black chadors.  It’s Africa!

I could have removed the figure of the woman just leaving the frame, but I didn’t because her chador is typical of this region. It is a printed bed sheet and was the height of style for certain groups of Berber women. They were also attracted to ruffled flannel nightgowns and young women wore them as dresses.
