Old Russia

Church with onion domes on volga river

On the Volga

Northern Russia 2009

When I told my friend, Torie, that I was going to Russia her comment was, “You’ll be shooting onion domes.” I hadn’t thought about it.  But she was right. I never tired of them, though. They represented old Russia, the Russia of fairytales and miracles.

In the 1930’s, Stalin dredged and enlarged the Volga River to build a waterway to Moscow. The water and the construction of the canal destroyed villages such as the one that had built this church. Many churches changed from houses of worship to warehouses or barracks.

Communism’s goal was to destroy religion. They succeeded in many ways…not just destroying Christianity but Islam as well. The Chinese Communists did and are doing their best to destroy Buddhism. Government becomes the new god.
