Important ceremonies took place inside this niche. The carvings on the ceiling were pointed out to us as indicating that this was something like a sanctuary.

Dusk falls on the temple. The Wall Street Journal has a story about the destruction of Palmyra by ISIS. It said that many of the Roman columns are still standing and some of the antiquities in the museum are also intact. The next worry is thievery.
