Portrait of an Artisan

The Gunsmith

Winston Salem, NC 2016

The men and women who portray the settlers in living museums must have the knowledge and skills of the artisans of the past. Here a gunsmith concentrates on making a rifle. I caught this man as he stood near a window.

Light streaming in from a window or door sculpts your subject. The difficulty might be that the light is too harsh thus making shadows go too black and highlights too bright. In this case, ask the subject to step away from the window or if you are in total control block some of the light by covering the window with a lightweight white cloth or white paper.

I used Topaz Impressions to give the image a painterly look to go along with the atmosphere of Early America.
