On a Spiritual Quest

Ladakh 2003

“We’re on a spiritual quest.” The Italian couple were charming. He was an ex-priest. She was the ex-wife of a wealthy industrialist. He wore jeans and sandals. She wore diamonds on hands that had never done a day’s work. He seemed genuine. She rather superior and condescending. He seemed more intense about the spiritual quest than she. Here he appears to be recalling his seminary days. Perhaps celibacy had its good points after all.

The Entrance to the Temple

Tattered scarves are tied to the doors of each temple. This is the kind of shot I loved to print in the darkroom. The shades of gray would print beautifully after only one or two tries. I had learned to consider the smooth progression of values beautiful. The glow of soft light on the worn surface evokes the spirituality of centuries of worship.
