Kazakhstan: riders tussle over dead sheep in game of Kokpar or buzhkazi

Combat!

Kazakhstan 2016

Our Turkistan guide lived in the village you can see in the background. He, like all the young men in the village, was an avid Kokpar rider. Kokpar is the name of the sport you see in the photo. It’s something like polo but instead of hitting a ball, the riders use a beheaded sheep.

The rider on the right, who is relying on balance to keep himself in the saddle, was fearless and despite his precarious position, he never fell from his horse. For that matter, neither did anyone else. Kazakhs learn to ride as toddlers.
