tiny Sudanese mosque in a Ghanaian village

Sudanese Mosque

Ghana 2003

This jewel of a Sudanese mosque is a “must see” in a small village in Northern Ghana.  The villagers were proud of the mosque and invited us to enter and to climb to the roof to take in the view. The roof is a flat area between the pinnacles.

The odd thing about the mosque is that the graveyard, immediately in front of the mosque, had Christian headstones with the names of the deceased accompanied by the words “Rest in Peace”. Christianity is the largest religion in Ghana and the Muslims have adopted this custom. Normally, Muslim graves are marked by small stones about the size of a coffee table book.
