Damaged Fresco of Christ in Sumela Monastery Eastern Turkey

Damaged Fresco in Sumela Monastery

Trabzon, Turkey 2008

Many of the frescoes in the monastery church (founded 380 AD) were damaged by Muslims who were offended by the representation of human figures. This figure of Christ adorned the main basilica. I am fascinated by the heavenward lifted eyes. They are filled with love, it seems to me. Maybe the vandals had the same impression because they didn’t destroy them.

If you are in a building which has a beautiful ceiling and you are without a tripod, you can set your camera on timer, lay it carefully…on a handkerchief or sweater so you don’t scratch your LCD screen…and place the camera so that it is pointed at the center of the design. You might have to try a couple of times to get it perfect.
