Friesian horse with cart and driver

Sunday Drive

Ventura, California, U.S.A. 2016

A woman waits for the judge’s decision in a driving competition. The “gigs” or light wagons are refurbished vehicles from the early 1900s or late 1800’s. It looks like fun to fly along on those high-wheeled carts.

Her horse is a Dutch breed, a Fresian. Originally, Friesians were bred to carry the knights of the middle ages, later they were used as farm work animals and cart horses. They are known for their black color, long, thick manes and knee action among other attributes.
