Sunrise on Sunday

Lalibela, Ethiopia: crowds of Coptic Christians pray outdoors, their numbers too large to enter the ancient stone church

Mass on St. Gabriel’s Day

Lalibela, Ethiopia 2013

Another view of the worshippers at one of the ancient stone churches in Lalibela. It felt like Easter morning to me when the rays of the rising sun lit the white shammas (shawls) of the people clustered on the hillside.

You might notice a bit of distortion in this photo. That is due to the lens I used…in Photoshop. Sometimes I feel as if I am doing the same thing over and over with my photos, but each time you work in Photoshop, you gain knowledge and skill. Sometimes, you can surprise yourself.

There are many saint’s days in the Coptic Church of Ethiopia or the Ethiopian Orthodox Church as it is called now. You’ll have a good chance of seeing a sight similar to this one if you are in Lalibela on a Sunday morning. Early!!
