black and white, woman waits on stairs with produce

Village Woman

Tashkent, Uzbekistan 2010

You might call her a “black market vendor”. These are farm women who don’t have permission to sell in the large city market of Tashkent. She must be constantly on the lookout for the market police. Here, she hides while the patrol passes by.

Wandering through markets is fun, not only for photos, but for meeting the locals. Interaction with the locals provides the best memories. Looking at this photo reminds me of watching as the market police escorted my friend, Torie, out of the market. Let me tell you, Torie has a story to tell about that!

Black and white best enhances this photo. The dark shadows and the highlights fall in exactly the right places. I could have brightened the woman’s face a bit, but her face isn’t important. You can see an expression of concern and that tells the story.
