Tea Time in Morocco

Tea Time in a Berber Tent

Guir Desert, Morocco

A Berber woman breaks a cone of sugar with a brass instrument called a sugar hammer. The cones are about 14 inches tall and at the base about 3 inches in diameter. I don’t know how much they weigh, but I do know that no Berber family is without their supply of sugar cones wrapped in navy blue paper.

Berbers like their tea very sweet. Huge lumps of sugar are stuffed into the small teapot until the tea has a syrupy consistency.
