The Candy Factory

India: a very large man stirs a caldron of boiling sugar as he sits in the lotus position on his charpoy

The Candy Maker

Vadodara, India 2009

Our guide led us on a walking tour of Vadodara, pointing out the delicate wooden carvings rotting away on the eaves of the old houses. I duly photographed them to show the guide that I was listening to him. Torie and I took turns playing “good girl”. Some days, she would listen and some days I did. I think Torie did a better job of looking appreciativeĀ as she took notes and I merely exclaimed whenever it seemed appropriate.

I peered into this man’s doorway and grabbed a couple of shots. How often do you spy a huge cauldron filled with a boiling liquid just inside the front door? He is making candy, the guide told me. From the size of the man, the candy is irresistible.

But what I want you to notice is that despite his size the man can sit in the lotus position. Isn’t that amazing?
