The Chapati Maker

a young woman makes chapatis

Never Ending

 Gujarat, India 2009

A Rabari matron rolls out and bakes chapatis. You can see a stack of them to her right. A chapatti is similar to a flour tortilla and it is used as a utensil to scoop up the dal that is eaten nearly three times a day in poorer parts of northern India.

Her clothing is what she wears every day. She wears all those bracelets, rings and necklaces every day as well, plus the nose ring. Her nose ring is rather modest in size and that shows she has been married for a while. New brides wear a huge nose ring, so heavy that they use a hank of hair to hold it in place. If they didn’t, the weight of the ring could rip the nostril.
