The Passagiatta

a beautiful Sicilian mother and child make a bella figura

La Bella Figura

Piazza del Duomo, Ortygia  2015

We sat on the steps of the Church of Santa Lucia. Most likely we were eating a gelato or had just finished eating a gelato. We always got ours in a cup, but the Sicilians got theirs on a brioche. My daughter laughed about eating “ice cream on a hot dog bun”.  We never tried it but it might be good.

I spotted this beautiful young woman taking her young son for a stroll. Their look-alike, stylish clothing caught my eye. Immediately, the phrase ‘la bella figura’ popped into my mind.

When I Photoshopped the photo, I noticed a tattoo on her left arm. I zoomed in and I see that she has a tattoo of her newborn son’s footprint, just like the one on the birth certificate. A real Italian mamma!

Joke:  It can be proved that Mary (the mother of Jesus) was an Italian.  How? Because she believed her son was God.
