The Saxon Village of Biertan

Landscape of Biertan, red tiled roofs with fortified church towering over the village

Village of Biertan

Romania, 2012

Biertan village: the Saxon Church dating from the 15th century, hovers over village houses with red tiled roofs. This is a slightly different view from the one I posted earlier. If I’d climbed higher on the mountain I’d have had a spectacular view of the whole village. Maybe next time???

The Saxons were invited to colonize this area by the Hungarian king, Geza.  The Saxons were to provide border protection. Because of this, they held a privileged position, but they didn’t always go out to protect the borders when the time came. Instead they huddled together in churches like Biertan, safe and secure behind the fortified walls.
