The Sea Eagle

Kazakh holds his sea eagle (white-tailed eagle) aloft while keeping a wary eye on him

Sea Eagle Aloft

Near Almaty, Kazakhstan 2016

We drove to a sort of ‘sea-world’ for birds of prey in the foothills of the mountains surrounding Almaty. The man in the photo above was the owner and trainer. Although, he does not appear to be Kazakh, he is. His German ancestors having settled in Kazakhstan in the days of the Tsars.

He referred to this eagle as a sea eagle and he was very cautious with it. Unlike the golden eagle, the sea eagle is nearly impossible to train.
