This was then: Istanbul Bazaar

Lemonade, Always Good

This is an old slide that I scanned. It’s horribly contrasty and in order to get some detail I had to saturate it to death plus add some colored filters. I often think of Jay Maisel’s dictum, “only show your best work”.  But beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I like this one. I like the face of the young man who is waiting for a glassful of cool, fresh, lemonade. His expression is so boyish. He can’t take his eyes away from the preparation of his drink. I like the utensil that the vendor is holding up. I think it like a wine thief, but I’m not sure. It seems to be holding the top of that brass container that sits in the middle of the table. Maybe it’s a squeezer… Oh, wait. I’ll check for us.

I blew up the detail and we can now see that the brass container is a large urn of lemonade and the vendor has extracted the lemonade with that gadget…and he is pouring it into a glass. You can see the beverage streaming from the bottom of that bottle-thing. So clever! In the back on the right is a Turkish ewer with a curved spout, a graceful design. I bought one and I still like mine.

The man wears a suit. Don’t you just love a man in a suit even with an open collar? His hair is neatly combed and his moustache trimmed. Where is he going? This was shot back when the economy in Turkey wasn’t doing well. I saw many healthy young men sitting behind a shoeshine box, waiting and waiting for a customer. I hope our friend in the photo has just landed a good job and he is celebrating the way a good Muslim would celebrate, with a glass of lemonade.
