Togo Woman Opens Granary

Somba Woman Opens Granary

Togo 2003

The Somba live in houses that resemble tiny castles. Pointed thatched roofs cover the turrets. Here a Somba woman opens one of the turrets that serves as a granary.

Storing Grain

Women fill the granary. The grain or beans or peanuts had been drying on the flat roofed parts of their houses. Most likely it was millet which is a nourishing grain that grows in hot dry weather.

That is our van over there on the left. I’m telling you because you might think it belongs to the family here. They have no vehicle and they don’t need one. They grow all they need and if they want to go to market they walk. And if they want to sell at market, they carry the goods on their head.

I can’t say for sure what these plants grow in this field, but it looks like tobacco to me.
