garacia woman in local market Gujarat India

Garacia Woman

Gujarat, India 2009

The Garacia are low on the caste list, low even for what were formerly called “untouchables” but are now called “dalits“. The Garacia are primarily nomadic but this woman appears to be a farmer. Her colorful dress consists of a full printed skirt, a long-sleeved blouse and a vest. I could always tell a Garacia woman because of that distinctive vest. Although our subject wears some bangles, she does not wear the multiple lac bracelets that are common among other tribal dalits.
