Vintage Photographs: Tripoli Souk

Tripoli Souk 1962

Tripoli Souk

Tripoli, Libya 1961

I visited Essaouira, Morocco in 1995 and, except for the men in the background wearing the red skullcaps, this scene from Libya in 1961 is nearly identical. The women of Essaouira wear a white haik (sheet like covering) and a black veil as this Libyan woman does and the same baskets were sold in the Essaouira souk. I know. I bought one.

Now Essaouira is a tourist paradise. Europeans have bought and remodeled old houses where fishermen once lived. The shops sell high-priced goods. Luxe hotels line the beach. And what about poor Tripoli? Smithereens most likely.

      Hello, Abdu.
I’m sure you are correct about the picture being of Tunis. My husband did go there. He was able to enter a home where he took some photos of the kitchen area. The walls were covered with copper utensils and dish-like things of woven palm fronds. I tried to scan this photo but was unsuccessful. I have always remembered that kitchen and the copper utensils…to the point that I tried to duplicate the idea in my home…in a small way.

      Thank you for your help!
      Rosemary
