Western Mongolia 2014: Winter Home

Sue and I walked over to visit this family thinking that we might find some photo opportunities. We had barely photographed the toddler playing outside in the dirt and the tethered cat when the door opened and a young Mongolian woman beckoned us to enter her home.

She ushered us through a mud room, so necessary on the steppes of Mongolia, and into a large living area. Our hostess gestured to some low chairs, made a futile gesture at cleaning the table cluttered with dishes from the morning meal and then brought her tiny daughter to amuse us. She sat the child on the floor and left us to our devices. Of course, for us that was perfect. We got out our cameras and began taking portraits.

After a bit, an older woman entered accompanied by a boy. Immediately, the woman went to the stove and poked the fire. Despite the sunny day, it was cold outside and the newcomers settled down by the warmth of the stove to watch us photograph the baby.
