Voodoo Dancer Togo

Togo 2001

We arrived at the village in dugout canoes. The excited villagers stood or sat around a clearing listening to the drummers. This young woman, her eyes half-closed, danced into the circle. She carried a “bouquet” of straw and a ram’s horn. She danced until she could dance no longer and when she fell to the ground, the women who were sitting nearby rushed to take her to the shade. Then a new dancer took the stage.
