Witch Doctor

Fetish priest in a village in Togo

Fetish Priest

Togo 2003

Our leader, Alberto Nicheli, referred to this man as a “fetish priest”. I titled this page as “witch doctor” because you will be familiar with that term, but this man did not fit our idea of a witch doctor. He seemed more like a kindly grandfather.

His people held him in high esteem and his job seemed to be offering prayers or ceremonies for anyone in need as well as being a kind of baby sitter for the children who loved to be in his presence.
