Women at the Well

Gujarati Village women fetch water

Starting the Day

Gujarat, India 2009

The women have a serious expression. They can’t get their day started without water for tea, cooking and ablutions. I added a greenish hue to this photo. It gives it a somber look, which is how I’d feel if I had to fetch the household water from the village well every morning.

I got several shots of this scene and didn’t really like any of them. But this morning, I noticed that if I cropped the empty foreground, I had a rather nice grouping of the women. There is some geometry here: a diagonal line formed by their heads ( the top ones) and a circle of heads in the group on the left. The circle is emphasized by the three pots carried by the woman in the foreground. There is a lot to like here!!
