The Desert Berbers of Morocco's Tafililet

VEILED GIRL, MARRAKESH

The wearing of the veil is optional for many women in Morocco. Berber women are traditionally unveiled in their villages but if they go to a city or a different village, they might wear a veil. A veil can be used to enhance a woman's beauty, such as this sheer veil worn by the woman in the photo.

Sometimes an unveiled woman will pick up the end of her chador and hold it over her face as she engages in conversation with a man, much as a woman might flutter a fan in front of her face. It can be interpreted as being flirtatious as well as modest.
