Applying the fantastic makeup took several hours.Skirts, bracelets, velvet shirt are part of the traditional costume.Kathakali originated in the 17th century but most likely its origins are much earlier.Eye movements are used to express the 9 emotions.This man is dressed in his underskirts and he reminded me of a Degas painting.Waiting for the curtain to rise and the show to go on.The orange silk skirt covers a multitude of underskirts that are necessary for the bouffant look that Kathakali demands.Men play all the roles. No women allowed.He is completely dressed and is getting into his role. He was a joker, I think.During the play, the woman was taken advantage of and her hero was outnumbered. I think she is pleading for help here.This man helped to dress the actors. His head looks as if it should be on a gold coin.The main villain. I had never heard of Kathakali and don't like mime. These actors were so good at projecting emotion, that I became involved in the story. Although I didn't know the plot, I could understand what was happening.Villain 2. They danced to ear-splitting drums; pounding the sides of their feet into the floor and adding to the exciting rhythm.The third villain.You just knew he was evil.
